The Client
Age UK is the UK’s leading charity for older people, supporting millions of people aged 65 and over with information, friendship and practical help. The Malnutrition Taskforce is a national coalition of organisations working to prevent and reduce malnutrition among older people, and a co-commissioner of this film, reflecting their broader commitment to improving the quality of care and communication around older people’s health and wellbeing.
The Brief
Age UK and the Malnutrition Taskforce jointly commissioned Nutmeg Productions to create an animated film about end of life – a subject that charities and filmmakers approach with considerable caution. The brief was clear: the film needed to communicate something human and deeply sensitive in a way that felt compassionate rather than clinical, accessible rather than overwhelming, and honest without being frightening. It needed to work for older people themselves, for their families, and for the carers and health professionals supporting them..
Our Approach
Animation was the clear creative answer to this brief. Animation allows sensitive subject matter to be addressed with complete honesty and without placing vulnerable contributors in front of a camera.
Nutmeg Productions worked with illustrator Gabi Froden to develop a visual language that felt warm, human and appropriate to the subject, neither clinical nor condescending, but genuinely kind. Gabi’s illustration style brought a softness and accessibility to the material that a more corporate or diagrammatic animation style would have undermined.
Every creative decision, from character design to pacing to narrative structure, was made in service of a single goal: to make a genuinely difficult subject feel navigable rather than frightening.
The collaboration between Nutmeg’s production team and Gabi’s illustration work is at the heart of what makes this film work.
The Result
The film has been used as a core resource across both Age UK and the Malnutrition Taskforce’s communications and education programmes, reaching thousands of older people, families, carers and healthcare professionals at the point where clear, compassionate communication matters most. The dual-organisation commission reflects the breadth of the film’s intended audience: it works as a public-facing awareness resource and as a clinical education tool within NHS and care settings.
This production is part of a long-standing creative partnership between Nutmeg Productions and Age UK, a relationship built on trust, shared values and a commitment to telling the truth about what it means to grow older in Britain today. It also sits within our wider body of work for the Malnutrition Taskforce, for whom we have produced further films addressing nutrition and older people’s health, details of which you can find on here.
For Nutmeg, this film is a strong example of animation doing what live action sometimes cannot: handling subjects that are medically serious, emotionally weighty and practically complex, with the care and craft they deserve.
